Since 2011 the works of the A-63 highway, between Cornellana and Salas, have been practically interrupted. The excavations then initiated remain open and, in most of them, there has not been time to implement stabilization treatments that had been raised at the beginning of the works. We must say that after these almost seven years, the current slopes present phenomena of superficial/deep instability of different pathology that should be considered in the coming months when the works are restarted. To plan the continuation of the excavation of a cut in which the slopes have been open for so long and the equipment was removed, it is necessary to establish the techniques and methodology of their excavation.
Therefore, Dragados wanted an investigation on this aspect, so that the most appropriate excavation technique could be known. A campaign to collect geomechanical data on the open excavation fronts has been carried out with which the excavability indexes [proposed by Bieniawski (1989) and Barton et al (1974), Kirsten (1982), Weaver (1989), Abdul Latif and Cruden (1983), and by Franklin et al (1971)] have been established. In addition, the rippability tables suggested by Caterpillar and Komatsu have been handled based on the propagation velocities of waves resulting from various seismic refraction geophysics campaigns. Correction factors must be applied to these indices, depending on the homogeneity of the lithologies, the mobility and accessibility of the equipment and the reuse of the material in compacted fillings.
